DERRICK W.

My mask symbolizes the state of mind you have to adapt in order to survive in adult jail. I felt like I was thrown to the wolves. If you don’t do what the pack does then you become prey yourself. I felt left behind and lost. No one is safe and you have to do what you need to for survival. You see things that normally would be terrible but you learn to live with it. Once you’ve spent time in adult jail you become a different person because you’ve had to adapt to a vindictive and extremely harmful environment. Other people also think of you differently. The most common misconception is that people tend to assume you are a criminal.  Not only do job employers think this of you, but also the general public. It leaves a lasting impacting on your life.
